Back Hernia Treatment with Physical Therapy

The lumbar region, which is located on the sacrum with the five vertebrae and intervertebral discs, is the most mobile region of the spine after the neck. The joints between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae and the 5th lumbar vertebra and the sacrum bone constitute the majority of the movement in the lower back. The discs between the vertebrae are made up of gelatinous fluid and the outer part consists of fibers consisting of fibrotic bands. Repetitive movements, excessive strain, posture disorders, and physical activities performed in inappropriate positions cause ruptures in the outer part called annulus fibrosis, the rupture starts from the inner fibers of the annulus and extends outwards.

As a result, the gelatinous fluid herniates outward and forces the ligaments in that area and puts pressure on the surrounding tissues. As the disease progresses, it compresses the sciatic nerve that goes to the leg, and it is mostly seen in young and middle ages. In advanced ages, it is seen with lumbar calcification.

How is the treatment of lumbar hernia?

Short-term bed rest should be in the most comfortable position and in a good bed. The bed should be firm and smooth and should not collapse with body weight. Lying on your back and putting a pillow under your legs is the best form of rest. In addition, the calf is placed on a seat and it is possible to rest on the back.

Painkillers, muscle relaxants, drugs are useful. Antidepressant medication should be used in chronically ill patients. The best treatment for sudden onset low back and leg pain is the administration of local anesthetic and steroid mixtures to be administered epidurally. This treatment is very effective in patients within the first two weeks. If there is functional scoliosis (side curvature of the spine), bracing may be required. The use of corsets should not be long-term.

Physical therapy and rehabilitation applied with superficial and deep heaters, low-frequency currents and traction help the majority of patients to resolve their complaints.v
